The Day Everything Changed
There are moments in life that divide everything into “before” and “after.” For us, that moment came with three words:
“You have cancer.”
Looking back, we can still remember where we were. We can remember the phone call. We can remember trying to absorb information that seemed to come faster than we could process it. What we remember most, though, is how overwhelming those first days were.
Suddenly there were medical terms we had never heard, treatment options we didn’t yet understand, and more questions than answers. There was no shortage of information. We found websites, books, statistics, medical journals, and countless opinions.
What we couldn’t find were honest conversations with people who had actually lived through what we were experiencing. We wanted to know what it really felt like. How did people make decisions when there wasn’t one obvious right answer? What did the first weeks after diagnosis actually look like? How did caregivers process the news while trying to stay strong for someone they loved?
Those were the conversations we couldn’t find.
Over the years, we’ve learned that every cancer story is different. Different diagnoses. Different treatments. Different priorities. Different outcomes. We would never suggest that our path should become someone else’s. But we do believe there is value in sharing experiences.
Sometimes another person’s story doesn’t give you the answer. Sometimes it simply helps you ask a better question.
That’s one of the reasons we created Life Between Scans.
Episode 2 tells the beginning of our cancer story. It’s not a story of having everything figured out. It’s the story of two people trying to make the best decisions they could with the information they had, learning as they went, and discovering that curiosity, partnership, and hope can coexist with fear and uncertainty.
If you’re walking your own path through cancer, whether as a patient, caregiver, family member, or friend, we hope this conversation reminds you that you don’t have to figure everything out today.
Pull up a chair.
We’d be honored to have you join the conversation.
